White Christmas
The German Weather Service only refers to a white Christmas when at least one centimeter of snow is measured on the 24th, 25th, and 26th of December. However, since a snow cover can also create a Christmas atmosphere on one or two days, we have also taken these cases into account. In total, we visualize data from 173 weather stations. The density of weather stations is particularly low in Northern Germany, as there are larger data gaps in the measured snow heights. You can find our methodology at the end of the page.
How have our winters changed?
Even though we often think about snow around Christmas, the frequency of snow throughout the entire winter is also of interest. The following graphic gives a more detailed overview of the historical snow frequency at your weather station by showing the number of snow cover days per winter.
